Tip of Borneo - Simpang Mengayau, Kudat

There are a few significant places that make up a nation or a state and these few make up Sabah;

Sipadan Island, which was nominated to be the finalist of the new Seven Wonders of the World a few years back, Maliau Basin deemed as the Lost World of Sabah a 588 square kilometres of geological stones surrounding the Maliau River, Mt. Kinabalu, one of the tallest mount in South East Asia and then there's the Tip of Borneo Kudat, well it's special that way because it is at the Tip of the Borneo Island.

Because we have to work half day on Saturdays, we had to leave to wherever we go on Saturdays only after work. So we packed our bags the night before so that we could leave after work immediately.

We left nearly 1pm because some of us were dragged for work and after buying some munchies and stuff, we were finally on our way to Kudat nearly 2pm. We reached there almost 5pm, thanks to our trusty driver YY :)

LOOK AT MY EPIC TAN woot
Kudat (Kudat Town)

Kudat is approximately a 3 hours drive (190 Kilometres) from Kota Kinabalu City. It is a small town located on the northern part of the island, with ethnic race Rungus as the main residents, and other sub group of the indigenous Kadazan. There's about 10% of the population which is Hakka Chinese and other minorities including Bajau, Dusun, Murut, Bugis and Malay.

Kudat is famous for the race's Rungus unique heritage - you can visit the Rungus longhouses, where you get to experience having luncheons and looking at how the Rungus stay at the longhouse, and also where the traditional "gongs" are made and where honey is produced in "Simpang Mengayau" the northernmost on the island of Borneo.

Kudat is also famous for it's Kacang Kuda, a type of peanut widely produced here in Kudat. It is extremely delicious!

Ah, Simpang Mengayau was where we headed.

According to the Sabah Tourism Website, Simpang Mengayau means a 'lingering junction' where South China Sea lingers and and meets the Sulu Seas flowing from the east. There's a famous lighthouse called the Pulau Kalampunian lighthouse - a reminder of treacherous coastline and past shipwrecks, looking over the beautiful Pulau Kalampunian the left of Simpang Mengayau.

The Tip of Borneo and the whole long stretch of beach were insanely gorgeous. White sands, beautiful waters and crazy view. I was the only one among them that have not visited Tip of Borneo so I was snapping away like nobody's business.

Walk to Tip of Borneo
There are plenty of things you can do when you're in Kudat or Simpang Mengayau. Okay fine, maybe they're not THAT much, the place is quiet, peaceful, perfect for those who are looking to chill out for a night or two. You can opt to stay at those small villas or chalets opposite the beach, I believe it shouldn't be too expensive and you'd have an amazing view to wake up to everyday.

Sunsets in Kudat is crazy beautiful. Ying Ying which is from Kudat brought us to this little hidden place to take the sunset photos from another place and ah omg. Mind you, none of these were photo shopped!

The beach is like empty! It's perfect for a private getaway with your lover or friends :)

Sun was burning my eyes from the other way.

Dinner at Esplanade Kudat Town

Kudat is extremely small. You'll be done with it in say maybe two or three rounds of driving. We had some awesome dinner at Esplanade Kudat Town. Most of the stuff we ordered were spicy heh, YY couldn't comprehend most so we ordered her some Fried Egg. Hehe.

Meals at the town you're visiting is a MUST. It's probably one of the fastest and most interesting way to learn about one's place or culture. Kudat is famous for it's seafood, so you should go around trying some seafood. Esplanade Kudat cooked both in Malay and Chinese styles. Yum.

My poor YY having to resort to satays and fried egg.

Kudat Golf and Marina Resort

The girls wanted some R & R so we stayed at the Kudat Golf Marina Resort.

It was fairly cheap for a Standard Room about RM 150 a night and we even included an extra bed, for about RM 46.25 per person.

Attached with a swimming pool, gymnasium, breakfast for two, lounging area and an adequate room. Nothing more nothing less for the four of us.

Lovely Cella and; Amy swimming around. They really love to swim.

Kudat Golf Marina Resort

I love my morning breakfast so much. I really wouldn't mind having to wake up really early in the morning just to enjoy my breakfast. It's crucial :)

We were there for only a night but we get to ;

1. Hang out by the Tip of Borneo
2. Have awesome dinner at Kudat Town
3. Swim some
4. I get to sleep under the stars (I was too tired from work)
5. Breakfast

Imagine the things you can do with 3 days 2 nights you lucky people!

Love,
Jacqueline Rowena @ Jacqkie.

Hi, any place that u can recommend besides Kudat Golf Marina Resort? Somewhere with beach access? Thanks. Lovely details of the place
Sorry for the late reply. For whatever reason I can't seem to reply through desktop.

Anyway, yes look out for Tommy's Place. This is right at the beach front.

Last I went there was in 2012 I think so there might be new ones, but Tommy's Place is one I know.

Hope this helps and enjoy your holiday! 😊

Pulau Mantanani // Mantanani Island

I started off my 10 day break with a day trip to Mantanani. I wanted to visit Mantanani for THE LONGEST TIME, but couldn’t get around doing so all these while, either I haven’t saved up enough or basically, just haven’t got the weekends to spare it with.   Some folks call it the mermaid island because of the dugong sightings underwater – which is seriously magical. Some folks even say you could catch a glimpse of dolphins. They’ve had photos with it, but I personally have never seen them before.  Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to share with you why this trip was important.    If you see the map above, I’ve yellow squared Mantanani Island in comparison to the journey from Kota Kinabalu. If you’re not a map kind of person, that is --- quite far. Not Sipadan (Tawau, Sandakan, Lahad Datu kind of far) but far enough to be a put off to some locals at times. Previously, you’d have to drive up north for approximately 1.5 hours, or take a bus...

Pulau Sapi @ Tunku Abdul Rahman Parks

Before I proceed to my write up on Pulau Sapi, let me do the duty to carefully explain to you why there are so many people talking about so many islands at the mention of the word, Sabah. Reason why I'm doing so is because whenever people visit KK City, they have very limited time in exploring most of the natural gorgeous attractions, and sometimes ended up just moving around KK City. And when one does that, people would usually end up asking, why are there so many mentions of islands when we get to experience none?  As you can see from the previous Matthew Paul map below; Sabah is situated close to top north of the Borneo Island. That said, it's a privilege to say that tons of islands are under the local towns and cities surrounding the shores of this particular part of Borneo island. From Sipitang (look out from South left), imagine yourself  "walking" from the Sipitang's shore / beach walk up slowly to Menumbuk, Kuala Penyu, Pulau Tiga, Kota Kinabalu, Tun...
